Hexagram + Recycled Series
Berkeley, 2007 - 2008
Oil paint, dried flowers, tin foil, paper, dirt, candy wrappers, galkyd, turpenoid, etc. on wood panels.
This series is made entirely out of recycled, gifted or found objects and materials. The concept takes its cue from interpretations of the I-Ching oracle used in conjunction with an image reference book taken from Googled images. The subject images were transferred onto a splatter-dripped background using a projector to create a pixelated look. Finally, each painting was covered with hand painted dots, and enhanced with glitter, and torn bits of tin foil or candy wrappers, moss and colored sand. The inspiration for this collection is simply that nothing can be turned into something, and that order comes out of chaos.
Berkeley Series
Berkeley, 2000
Oil paint on hand made canvases.
These paintings were created in the Fall of 2000, upon arriving in Berkeley for the first time.
Pond Painting
Grass Valley, 2007
Oil Paint, rabbit skin glue, chalk, charcoal, tin foil bits, paper, crayon, dirt, and acrylic paint on recycled cotton and gauze fabric.
This painting was inspired by an afternoon spent contemplating a koi pond in Hirakata Park, in Japan on a hot summer day in Summer 2001. The painting is a culmination of studies done that tried to recapture the memory of the pond. Studies include mobile sculptures of the leaves, and several other paintings, all of which are in several private collections.
The Black + White Period
Grass Valley, Berkeley, New York 1998 - 2002
The major theme during the black and white period is an autobiographical head which travels through various landscapes comprised of swirling motifs, arabesques, shooting rays and mechanical explosions. Works include: sumi-e ink drawings, studies for paintings, paintings, notebooks, limited edition lithographs, and sculptures (many were lost over the years). Often, writing accompanied the numerous black, white and red studies done for sketchbooks, paintings, and ceramics. This was the most prolific period of art making and was inspired by the work of Cezanne, Goya, Dali, Picasso, Caulder, Kahlo and the writings of thinkers Dostoevsky, Nietzche, Kafka and Vonnegut.
